Visitor Services Host

Kam Wah Chung State Heritage Site

Needed From October 1, 2020
Needed To October 31, 2020

“Kam Wah Chung is a hidden treasure! Tour visitors are transported back in time – and they love it!” Park Hosts Sid and Roxanne White (2018).

Become an interpretive park host volunteer at Kam Wah Chung State Heritage Site!!

This historical landmark in the beautiful John Day Valley is located near the Strawberry Mountains Wilderness. Here you will find opportunities for fishing, canoeing, hiking, biking and exploring other nearby historic sites.

Kam Wah Chung’s historic building and Interpretive Center tell the story of the Chinese immigrants’ experience in the John Day’s Chinatown, a story of hardship, perseverance and success. We would like you to join us in telling this amazing story.

We are looking for enthusiastic, visitor-oriented hosts willing to conduct tours, with training provided, and/or staff the front desk of the Interpretive Center. Hosts conducting tours will work with staff and conduct 45-minute tours on a rotating schedule. This position does require being on your feet for an extended time.

Two full-hookup, partly shaded host sites adjacent to Canyon Creek are located between the Interpretive Center and Museum. They are also within walking distance of restaurants, a grocery store, drug store, and many fine antique stores.

Host duties include: conducting tours, greeting visitors at the front desk, selling gift shop items, light cleaning of the Interpretive Center and historic building and other tasks as needed. Hosts are not required to clean the restroom. Your weekly work schedule will be four days on, may include weekends, from 8:45 am to 5 pm, with an hour off for lunch, and three days off.  Or, if there are two hosts available during the month, your working days will be three on, three off.

We prefer a two-month commitment but may make exceptions; let us know!

If you’re interested in this truly unique host opportunity, contact Kam Wah Chung’s curator, Don Merritt at donald.merritt@oregon.gov or (541)575-2800.
