Living History Program set for Champoeg State Heritage Area April 2
Donald, OR—Spring means preparing soil and sowing seeds, and Champoeg State Heritage Area is hosting a planting event you don’t want to miss. Beginning 9 a.m., April 2, four teams of horses and mules hitched to authentic, 19th-century equipment will plow, disc and plant the wheat field behind the historic Manson barn. The barn is part of the park visitor center and day-use area and once was part of the Manson farmstead.
“We’re ecstatic that we can again offer interpretive events at Champoeg,” said Park Ranger Dan Klug. “2022 is the Oregon State Parks Centennial and gathering native resources and raising crops has been an integral part of the park’s history through time.
This summer the growing wheat will be part of other interpretive program leading to the final living history threshing event in September.
The event is free; however, parking is $5. A parking permit fee station is located in the parking area, or purchase a 12- or 24-month park permit online. Future events at Champoeg and other Oregon State Parks are included in the statewide event calendar.
