Join Naturalist/Educator, Roland Begin, for adult-themed, educational hikes in the Tryon Creek forest. Hikes start from the Nature Center front porch and will average 2 miles. Content geared to ages 12+.
9/21: Plants of the Tryon Creek Forest: Autumn: Learn how to identify them and their seasonal cycles and uses.
10/26: Introduction to Forest Fungi: Learn the basic types of fungi and their physiology (note: not focused on edible fungi).
11/2: Fungal Webs in PNW Forests: Learn about the physiology of mycorrhizal fungi and the networks (“Wood Wide Web”) they can form between trees and other plants in the forest.
11/16: PNW Forest Ecology: Learn about how forests recover from disturbances (e.g. fire, wind, landslides), as well as specific examples of how climate change is altering the ecology of the forest.
11/23: Landslides, Earthquake Faults, and Tryon Creek Geology: Learn about the unique geology of Tryon Creek plus how to use geological maps and SLIDO (state-supported landslide tool).
12/14: Corvids of the Tryon Creek Forest: Learn about the smart and chatty ravens, jays, and crows, who make the forest their home.
12/21: Winter Solstice: Learn about the winter solstice and some of the key adaptations that plants and animals have to get through our PNW winters.
