Join naturalist/educator, Roland Begin, for adult-themed, educational hikes in the Tryon Creek forest. Hikes start from the Nature Center front porch and will average 2 miles. Content geared to ages 12+.
6/8: History of Tryon Creek: Learn the long and varied human story of Tryon Creek.
6/29: Plants of the Tryon Creek Forest: Summer: Learn how to identify them and their seasonal cycles and uses.
7/20: PNW Forest Ecology and Climate Change: Learn about how forests recover from disturbances (e.g. fire, wind, landslides), as well as specific examples of how climate change is altering the ecology of the forest.
7/27: Fungal Webs in PNW Forests: Learn about the physiology of mycorrhizal fungi and the networks (“Wood Wide Web”) they can form between trees and other plants in the forest.
8/10: Climate Change and the Rise of the Invasive Plants: Learn about the rapid changes happening in the forest, especially those of invasive plants, like stinging nettle, jewelweed, bracken fern, blackberry, etc.
8/24: Corvids of the Tryon Creek Forest: Learn about the smart and chatty ravens,
jays, and crows, who make the forest their home.
9/7: Landslides, Earthquake Faults, and Tryon Creek Geology: Learn about the unique geology of Tryon Creek plus how to use geological maps and SLIDO (state-supported landslide tool).
9/21: Plants of the Tryon Creek Forest: Autumn: Learn how to identify them and their seasonal cycles and uses.
