Join Naturalist/Educator, Roland Begin, for adult-themed, educational hikes in the Tryon Creek forest. Hikes start from the Nature Center front porch and will average 2 miles. Content geared to ages 12+.
12/21: Winter Solstice: Learn about the winter solstice and some of the key adaptations that plants and animals have to get through our PNW winters.
1/4: Plants of the Tryon Creek Forest: Winter Twigs: Learn how to identify forest plants from their twigs.
1/18: Lichen, Moss, and the Ferns of Tryon Creek: Learn about these simple but abundant plants and their critical roles in forest ecology.
2/1: PNW Forest Ecology: Learn about how forests recover from disturbances (e.g. fire, wind, landslides), as well as specific examples of how fast changing climate is altering the ecology of the forest.
2/15: Fungal Webs in PNW Forests: Learn about the physiology of mycorrhizal fungi and the networks (“Wood Wide Web”) they can form between trees and other plants in the forest.
3/8: Landslides, Earthquake Faults, and Tryon Creek Geology: Learn about the unique geology of Tryon Creek plus how to use geological maps and SLIDO (state-supported landslide tool).
3/22: Plants of the Tryon Creek Forest: Spring!: Learn how to identify them and discover their seasonal cycles and uses.
