Welcome the New Year with Oregon State Parks on a guided First Day Hike from Viento State Park to Starvation Creek Falls along the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail. Led by volunteer guides from the OSU Certified Naturalist program, this winter outing explores the connections between the Columbia River Gorge's dramatic geology, diverse natural environment, and human history.
Along the route, participants will discover how ancient volcanic activity, powerful floods, and ongoing geological processes shaped the Gorge's remarkable landscape. The hike will also explore the story behind the name Starvation Creek and the historical events that connect this place to the people who traveled through and lived in the Gorge.
Surrounded by towering cliffs, forested slopes, and seasonal waterfalls, participants can enjoy opportunities for nature observation, photography, and shared discovery while starting the year outdoors. This experience celebrates Oregon's natural and cultural heritage, outdoor recreation, and environmental stewardship.
Participants should dress for winter weather and wear sturdy footwear with good traction. Trail conditions may be wet, muddy, or slippery, and the route includes uneven surfaces and some elevation gain.
